Vermont welcomes French-Canadians

Scenic Vermont sends a message to its northern neighbours: Canadians are bienvenue.

Burlington city council unanimously passed motion to encourage local businesses to put up more French signs and get their employees to

learn the language.  Norman Blais, the councillor who sponsored the motion, told The Canadian Press “We really want people to know we’re putting out the welcome mat.”

Deputy Commissioner Steve Cook of the Vermont tourism office said that Canadian travel agencies are ordering twice as many Vermont travel guides this year.  It’s no wonder why Vermonters are enthousiastic in the project to cater to French-Canadians, with scenic getaways such as the Hermitage Inn offering discounts to travelers.  Nestled on 100 acres of lawns, fields, and woodlands, this country retreat offers fine art and antiques to accent accommodations, with the prints of French painter Michel Delacroix prominently displayed.

Another local gem is the historic town of Bennington, with its three historic districts and beautiful countryside, museums, art galleries, specialty shops, casual to upscale dining options, country farm stands, five covered bridges and scenic mountain views.  The Taconic and Green Mountains form the local landscape as their portion of the Appalachians.

Northfield will be holding its annual Northfield Labour Day Weekend celebration with a plethora of events to accent the parade.

For Canadians, the opportunities for a relaxing getaway in the area are plentiful.  A stop at the Duty Free land border store nearest you can save you a bundle on goods which you can consume during your travels in the beautiful countryside.
