Traveller breaks record, spending 50,000 euros on wine
‘Tis the season for that special bottle One lavish traveller is planning on ending this year in grandiose style. A man purchased six bottles of rare wines for nearly $80,000 Canadian dollars at a Parisian duty free shop. His purchase consisted of a bottle of Romanee Conti 1995, a Chateau Margaux 2003, two bottles of Chateau Lafitte 1982 and two bottles of Petrus 1980. Such purchases can be the result of impulse buying, or in some cases the result of a customer asking the shop to find a bottle of a particular year for a special occasion. High-quality wines typically sell better…
Brrr! The winter chills are here – and so are the Icewines at Duty Free Canada shops!
“Dessert wines, often rare and expensive, are unique wines and the most difficult to make; but when successful, they earn some of the highest ratings given by our editors. Enlisted to do a specific job in a specific situation, these luscious nectars are the special teams of the wine world. They accompany the dessert course, or even take its place and star on their own. Yet despite delivering high quality more often than not, dessert wines are generally misunderstood, underestimated or simply ignored.” – Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator Canada produces some of the most highly rated sweet wines in the world, with…
Beer industry blames itself for falling behind
Beer industry leaders have blamed a multi-year slump on everything from the economy and weather to anti-smoking laws in bars. But one top executive is bluntly suggesting that the industry itself is the problem for failing to out-market the spirits category. “The days of beer guys knocking each other around and not worrying too much about spirits and wine is over, and it’s frankly been over for a long time,” MillerCoors CEO Tom Long said in a speech to hundreds of beer distributors gathered this week in Las Vegas for a meeting of the National Beer Wholesalers Association. “We’re going to…
Fire will help the moose but hurts Minnesota
The Boundary Waters Canoe Area is considered by many to be one of the top scenic destinations in Minnesota. Roughly 10 percent of the area has been burned in a forest fire which started August 18th. The park is home to a significant portion of Minnesota’s moose population. While biologists state that the damage could actually benefit the moose, damage to the park could hamper Explore Minnesota’s efforts to posit the region as a place of calm and serenity. While communities across Minnesota assist in firefighting efforts, Oakdale writer Jeff Roberts shares his first-person account of traveling through the Boundary Waters…

Blue Jays attempt to shut Boston out of the playoffs, stay above .500
Wakefield battles Morrow in eighth attempt at 200th win Could this finally be the game when everything falls into place for the Red Sox and Tim Wakefield, enough so that the veteran knuckler can earn his 200th victory? After it seemed like a near certainty weeks ago, Wakefield will take his record eighth stab at No. 200 on Tuesday at Fenway Park when the division-rival Blue Jays come to town to kick off a brief two-game set. The Red Sox, who have lost four straight series for the first time this year, could use any kind of positive momentum swing…

Green Data Centers in New York?
In New York State, data transfer accounts for 3% of the state’s total power consumption. To help make this usage more efficient, New York’s Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) has partnered with Clarkson University, Advanced Micro Devices, HP and other private businesses to demonstrate how a network of wind- and solar-powered data centers could create a new model for data center and renewable energy operations. The total investment in this project is close to $675,000. You can read more on the NYSERDA project here. You can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions by carpooling, arranging a bus trip, or checking…
How to Dig Indiana
Ammagan wrote on Visit Indiana’s blog: If the Penrod Arts Fair is Indiana’s Nicest Day, then Dig-IN is definitely Indiana’s Tastiest Day. This year’s Dig-IN took place yesterday at the White River State Park in Indianapolis. Tickets were $20 in advance and $30 at the door, though I received two complimentary tickets so I could review the event for this blog. There was never a better day to showcase the gorgeous setting of the park. Nice breeze, moderate temps, bright sun. It was the perfect backdrop for an afternoon of Indiana food and drink. More than two dozen dishes from…
