See one of the NHL’s fiercest rivalries this week – Montreal vs. Boston
It has been a disappointing start for both the Montreal Canadiens and the Boston Bruins. The first meetings of the season between these clubs will surely be filled with desperation and should amount to very entertaining games. Montreal crushed the Philadelphia Flyers Wednesday to win their first game of the season while playing at home. The Bruins have come around in their last couple outings but still face criticism of suffering a 2010 season championship hangover. Despite playing respectably this season for Montreal, goaltender Carey Price is having to absorb some of the blame for the team’s recent woes, as…
Drive down the west coast – make it the drive of a lifetime.
Have you ever noticed how many car commercials are shot on a winding highway, high above the ocean, with nothing but a mountainous coastline and a shiny car in view? The majority of these are shot on California’s Pacific Coast Highway. Listed on National Geographic’s list of Drives of a Lifetime, this 1056 km (656 mi) highway runs down the majority of the west coast of the United States. The Big Sur section from San Luis Obispo to Carmel is an official National Scenic Byway. Bloggers have catalogued their trips down the west coast by letting their pictures do the talking. Indeed there’s…
Beer industry blames itself for falling behind
Beer industry leaders have blamed a multi-year slump on everything from the economy and weather to anti-smoking laws in bars. But one top executive is bluntly suggesting that the industry itself is the problem for failing to out-market the spirits category. “The days of beer guys knocking each other around and not worrying too much about spirits and wine is over, and it’s frankly been over for a long time,” MillerCoors CEO Tom Long said in a speech to hundreds of beer distributors gathered this week in Las Vegas for a meeting of the National Beer Wholesalers Association. “We’re going to…

Peanut Butter prices going up – stock up now!
Canadian consumers could soon feel an extra twinge in their wallets when they go to pay for their favourite brand of peanut butter at the supermarket. Thanks to smaller U.S. peanut crop yields because of a drought in the southern U.S and a decision by American farmers to seed less acreage in peanut crops and plant more cotton, the price of a regular jar of peanut butter — even the organic kind you buy at health food stores — is likely going to go up sometime this year. And while Canadian manufacturers of peanut butter are reluctant to be specific…
Wine-makers depend on tourism, regulation changes to rectify late harvest troubles in BC
After a cool summer, the wine harvest in the Okanagan is running late. Wine makers in the region are also up against rising costs, regulatory headaches and an August study that concludes B.C.’s wine sector is at risk of saturation. But Glenn Fawcett, a Calgary entrepreneur who put together a group of investors to buy the highly regarded Black Hills winery in 2007, remains optimistic. He is part of a growing wine community that features players ranging from industry heavyweight Vincor Canada to boutique wineries that produce a few hundred cases of wine a year. A draft August report –…
Need a break on gas? Get a Gas Buddy
There are many indicator lights on the dash of a car, some more terrifying then others. However, in these trying times there seems to be one light that fills drivers with the most dread. That light is the low fuel indicator. Times are tough, people all over the nation are needing to tighten their belts, and pinch their pennies. With gas prices rising, a service that began on the internet is now available on your phone. GasBuddy is an app that helps the regular consumer make sure that when they buy gas, they are buying it for the best price possible…
Cruising for Breweries in New England
From a romantic weekend getaway to a vacation at a family resort, a trip to New England takes you to a distinctly American region rich in history, culture, and natural beauty. One tasty way to sample each of these is by making up your very own brew pub tour. American brew pubs, or”brewery taverns,” have been growing in popularity since 1986 (at that time, there were only five in the US). These establishments sought to revive the sentiment of well-known early Americans such as William Penn, Samuel Adams and Patrick Henry. The growth of brew pubs in the United States in the last 20…
