Take part in the world’s largest Amish community in Ohio

What better way to compliment your Duty Free wines than with some homemade, all-natural cheese? Make your taste buds dance with delight when you sink your teeth into cheeses made on the Amish Country Byway. As you drive the eastern half of the byway through the rolling hills and past the peaceful farms of central Ohio, stop a few miles northeast of Berlin to explore Heini’s Cheese Chalet.  A vibrant mural depicting the “history of cheese making” welcomes you, depicting everything from the cheese-making of nomads in Switzerland hundreds of years ago to present-day techniques. The Chalet’s attractions also include a gift shop,…

Drive down the west coast – make it the drive of a lifetime.

Have you ever noticed how many car commercials are shot on a winding highway, high above the ocean, with nothing but a mountainous coastline and a shiny car in view? The majority of these are shot on California’s Pacific Coast Highway. Listed on National Geographic’s list of Drives of a Lifetime, this 1056 km (656 mi) highway runs down the majority of the west coast of the United States.  The Big Sur section from San Luis Obispo to Carmel is an official National Scenic Byway. Bloggers have catalogued their trips down the west coast by letting their pictures do the talking.  Indeed there’s…

The Ultimate Round Trip – United States segment

Two South Africans have gone on an extended vacation around the world to take in and share their experience in an online blog. This follows the trend of staying connected with friends and family by way of the internet during long-distance journeys. Tristan had just finished studies in Town Planning at university. Likewise, Dominique finished postsecondary studies and wanted more. Tristan said, “I feel like there’s so much more fun stuff to do rather than sitting behind a desk all day. So that’s where this trip, and subsequently this blog, come into the frame.” To say this is a small…

Would they let you cross the border like this?

This is probably the most intense group of road trippers around. Booting around the country with metal music blaring probably isn’t the best way to preserve your hearing.  But for metal music listeners that’s probably the least concern. This video depicts a group of youths cruising through Moscow on a modified motorcycle complete with drumkit, amps, and a guitar player (looks like there’s room for two!). We agree with Mashable: We have almost literally no context for why they did this to their motorcycle or even why they decided to start playing an impromptu concert in the middle of a…

On The Road: Blogger Heaven

Road tripping is an enlightening and unique experience that everyone should enjoy at least once in a while. Jack Kerouac’s On the Road remains one of North America’s most significant testaments to the value of road tripping. While Salvator “Sal” Paradise and his cronies might not be the most admirable of characters, their quest for transcendence across a vast land of varied culture and landscape is a journey that many aspire to take part of. The continual improvement of social media and mobile phone apps makes it ever convenient to share experiences across the country. Here are a couple recent…

Between Vermont and Alabama on the Appalacian Trail

A question mailed to roadtripusa.com asked which route two retirees should take to travel from Birmingham, Alabama, to a friend’s summer home in northern Vermont. While their trip will occur entirely within the United States, Canadian travelers can learn from what was recommended to them. For lodging, they prefer bed and breakfasts, but settle for motels when convenient.  Their culinary preference is to picnic, and their activity of choice is hiking. The route that best suits their needs is the Appalachian Trail.  It is one of the longest, continuously marked footpaths in the world, measuring roughly 2,180 miles in length. The Trail goes through…
